The stone

High in the Sar-e Sang Valley in northeastern Afghanistan lie mountains strewn with deep blue boulders. This iconic stone – lapis lazuli – has fascinated people for millennia. It was once so exclusive that it was reserved for the death masks of pharaohs and the brush tips of the most celebrated Renaissance artists. Until the industrial age, lapis lazuli was as expensive as gold. Afghanistan is home to the world’s largest lapis lazuli deposits.
