The stone

This mineral (scientific name: chrysocolla) is known locally as Bamiyan turquoise and is mined just a stone’s throw from the famous Bamiyan Buddha statues, which were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. Bamiyan lies in a stunning, lush green valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
