The stone

Lapis lazuli was once so exclusive that it was used only for the death masks of pharaohs and the brush tips of the most famous Renaissance artists. Until the industrial age, lapis lazuli was as expensive as gold.

Bamiyan turquoise, as the locals call it (scientific name: chrysocolla), is less well-known but equally impressive. It is mined just a stone’s throw from the famous Bamiyan Buddha statues, which were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
